## Quick Brief

Buffalo enters Thursday night as the clear prediction market favorite after opening the season with a 36-31 win over Houston.

The Bills carry a 68% chance of beating Detroit on Kalshi, while the Lions sit at 32% after surviving a 31-30 overtime opener against New Orleans. Both teams had to make late plays to reach 1-0.

Other game markets are considerably tighter. Buffalo covering a 5.5-point spread is priced at 50%, while the probability of the teams combining for more than 54.5 points sits at 51%.

Traders favor Buffalo at home, while treating both a six-point Bills victory and a relatively high-scoring game as much closer calls.

The player markets put Gibbs near the center of attention. He carries a 63% probability of reaching 70 rushing yards and is the highest-priced Lions player to score a touchdown at 69%.

Allen is priced at 60% to throw at least two touchdowns and 50% to score one himself, pointing to the potential for direct scoreboard impact by the Bills superstar.

## Buffalo brings an explosive offense home

Buffalo's opener offered an immediate reminder of what Allen can do when the passing game creates opportunities downfield.

Allen threw for 334 yards against Houston and finished with 357 total yards and four total touchdowns in the 36-31 victory. He averaged 13.2 air yards per attempt and completed five passes of at least 30 yards, the most in a regular-season game in his career. His 34-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Palmer with 1:36 remaining provided the winning score.

That could present a difficult matchup for a Detroit secondary coming off an uneven opener. The Lions held New Orleans scoreless for more than 40 minutes but eventually allowed Tyler Shough to throw for 410 yards and three touchdowns. Detroit surrendered six passing plays of at least 20 yards, with only Minnesota allowing more in Week 1.

The secondary was also shorthanded. Detroit played without Christian Izien, its expected starting nickel, and cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. Izien is expected to return Thursday, giving the Lions another option as they prepare for Allen and Buffalo's downfield passing game.

Buffalo's running game was quieter. James Cook finished with 57 yards on 13 carries as the Bills generated only 63 rushing yards on 15 designed handoffs. Cook's 70-yard threshold on Thursday is priced at 57%.

The setting adds another wrinkle. Thursday is the first regular-season game at the new Highmark Stadium, with Detroit becoming the first visiting team to play there in a game that counts.

## Gibbs gives Detroit its counterpunch

If Buffalo's Week 1 offense revolved around Allen's arm, Detroit leaned heavily on Gibbs.

The fourth-year running back carried 29 times for a career-high 156 yards and two touchdowns against New Orleans, while adding five receptions for 30 yards. His 186 yards from scrimmage accounted for more than half of Detroit's 369 total offensive yards.

Buffalo defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard called stopping Gibbs and Detroit's running game his top priority this week, with the Lions coming off a 165-yard rushing performance.

Detroit will have to recreate that success with a reshuffled offensive line. Starting left guard Christian Mahogany and right tackle Blake Miller have both been ruled out, while center Juice Scruggs was a full participant Wednesday after being limited earlier in the week. Buffalo produced three sacks, nine quarterback hits, and eight tackles for loss against Houston.

Goff was efficient rather than explosive in the opener, completing 26 of 39 passes for 206 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. His overtime touchdown to Amon-Ra St. Brown helped Detroit escape after surrendering a 21-point lead.

There is also recent history suggesting these offenses can turn the matchup into something much different. When Buffalo and Detroit met in 2024, Allen and Goff combined for 856 passing yards and nine total touchdowns in a 48-42 Bills victory.

## What to Watch

- **Detroit's secondary:** Allen attacked Houston downfield immediately, while the Lions allowed six completions of 20-plus yards against New Orleans. Limiting explosive plays could be central to keeping Buffalo from creating separation.
- **Gibbs against Buffalo's front:** Gibbs accounted for 34 touches and 186 scrimmage yards in Week 1\. Buffalo has made slowing him a priority, while his 70-yard rushing threshold carries a 63% probability.
- **Detroit's offensive line:** Mahogany and Miller are both out on a short week, testing Detroit's depth against a Bills front that generated consistent pressure in its opener.
- **A new home in Buffalo:** The Bills play their first regular-season game in the new Highmark Stadium, adding another variable to Detroit's first road trip of the season.
