Michigan’s season nearly went sideways before it really began.

The Wolverines needed a 47-yard Hail Mary as time expired to beat Western Michigan 13–12 last week, a result that knocked them out of the AP Top 25\. Seven days later, they get a much stiffer test. Prediction markets have moved decisively toward Oklahoma.

## Quick Brief

Michigan gets an immediate chance to prove last week was an aberration.

The winner market now gives Oklahoma a clear edge after the matchup spent much of the summer closer to a coin flip. The rest of the board is more restrained. Traders are almost evenly split on Oklahoma winning by more than 4.5 points, while the scoring markets also sit near a coin flip.

That leaves a fairly clean question for Saturday: was Michigan’s opener simply an ugly escape, or did it reveal problems that a ranked opponent can exploit?

## Michigan has plenty to clean up

The final-play touchdown rescued Michigan from one of the biggest surprises of opening weekend, but it did not erase what came before it.

The Wolverines managed only 276 total yards against Western Michigan, finished with 12 first downs, went 3-for-10 on third down, and possessed the ball for less than 20 minutes. Bryce Underwood completed 12 of 22 passes for 170 yards and accounted for both Michigan touchdowns, including one on the ground.

The performance was jarring enough to send Michigan from No. 16 completely out of the AP rankings.

Saturday is less about defending a ranking and more about restoring confidence. Michigan still has the advantage of more than 100,000 fans at the Big House, but Oklahoma is a more imposing threat than Western Michigan.

## Oklahoma arrives with the opposite kind of opener

The Sooners could hardly have asked for a cleaner start.

No. 11 Oklahoma beat UTEP 51–0, scoring on its first eight possessions and holding the Miners to 198 total yards. Quarterback John Mateer completed 11 of 17 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns before leaving late in the third quarter.

Michigan spent Week 1 trying to escape. Oklahoma spent it removing doubt.

Still, the secondary contracts stop well short of pricing another comfortable Sooners win, a reminder that winning in Ann Arbor is a very different assignment from dominating UTEP at home.

There is some history working against Michigan, too. Saturday will be only the third meeting between the programs. Oklahoma won the first two.

## Other CFB Prediction Markets We’re Watching Saturday

- **Oregon at Oklahoma State:** No. 6 Oregon is a 93% favorite, but needed a fourth-quarter touchdown to escape Boise State 34–27 last week. The Ducks now head to a sold-out Boone Pickens Stadium for their first road game of the season.
- **Arizona State at Texas A&M:** Texas A&M is favored at 85%. Both offenses announced themselves loudly in Week 1: A&M beat Missouri State 50–0, while Arizona State hung 70 on Morgan State behind six touchdown passes from Cutter Boley.
- **Rice at Notre Dame:** As 99% favorites, the question is how convincingly the Irish handle business. Notre Dame opened with a 41–13 win over Wisconsin and enters Saturday tied at 12% near the top of the [national title market](https://www.predictmatters.com/2026-college-football-national-championship-prediction-market-forecast/) alongside Miami and Ohio State.
- **Alabama at Kentucky:** Alabama is a 77% favorite, with the 10.5-point margin contract below 50%. The Crimson Tide looked sharp in a 48–10 opener against East Carolina, but Saturday brings its first road game and SEC test of the season.
- **Arizona at BYU:** BYU is favored at 72% in an early Big 12 matchup that could help establish the conference hierarchy behind Texas Tech. In last year’s meeting, BYU erased a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit and beat Arizona 33–27 in double overtime.

## What to Watch

- **Michigan’s response.** Last week’s escape cost the Wolverines their ranking. Saturday provides an immediate opportunity to change the conversation.
- **Oklahoma away from Norman.** The Sooners looked dominant in Week 1, but this is their first road test and a dramatically different environment.
- **The 4.5-point threshold.** Oklahoma owns the clearer winner-market advantage, but traders are split on whether the Sooners can create much separation.
- **Michigan’s offense.** The Wolverines produced only 276 yards against Western Michigan. That level of output could make life difficult against a stronger opponent.
