The Hoosiers went 16–0, won the College Football Playoff National Championship, and became the first major college football team to finish 16–0 since Yale in 1894\. Curt Cignetti begins Year 3 with Indiana ranked No. 6 in the country and facing a very different set of expectations. Prediction markets see little reason to expect an opening-week stumble. Indiana carries a 99% probability of beating North Texas, with more than $3 million already traded on the winner market. The margin is considerably less certain. Indiana is priced at just 47% to beat North Texas by more than 40.5 points, while the probability of the teams combining for more than 56.5 points sits at 51%. ## How Big Will the Indiana Win Be? A 40-point threshold would be extreme for most teams. Indiana under Cignetti has made margins like that considerably less unusual. The Hoosiers are 15–0 at home under Cignetti, winning those games by an average of 38.1 points. Overall, he's 27–2 through his first two seasons at Indiana, with those 27 victories the most ever by an FBS head coach in his first two years at a school. Last year's squad averaged 41.6 points per game while allowing just 11.7, finishing the season with a 666–187 scoring advantage. Even against that backdrop, the market isn't convinced another rout is coming. Indiana is overwhelmingly expected to win, but whether the Hoosiers win by more than 40 points is essentially a toss-up. ## A New Quarterback Takes Over the Champions Indiana's biggest change comes behind center. Josh Hoover, a transfer from TCU, takes over for Fernando Mendoza, Heisman Trophy winner and the first overall pick in the NFL Draft. It's the third consecutive season Cignetti will open with a first-year Indiana transfer as his starting quarterback. Hoover doesn't arrive short on experience. He made 31 starts across four seasons at TCU and finished his time there with 9,629 passing yards and 71 touchdowns, ranking fourth in program history in both categories. He threw for 3,472 yards and 29 touchdowns last season after setting TCU's single-season passing record with 3,949 yards in 2024. That gives Indiana a proven passer rather than a developmental project, but Saturday will be the first look at how Hoover fits an offense coming off a championship season. ## North Texas Starts Over After 12 Wins North Texas presents an unusual opponent to evaluate. The Mean Green went 12–2 last season, but head coach Eric Morris departed for Oklahoma State. Neal Brown took over after spending 2025 as a special assistant to Steve Sarkisian at Texas. North Texas enters Brown's debut with 70 newcomers, including 50 transfers. Last year's record was impressive, but hardly a description of the team Indiana will face Saturday. There is one particularly familiar face. North Texas quarterback Tayven Jackson spent two seasons at Indiana, including one under Cignetti, before transferring to UCF for 2025\. He now returns to Bloomington for his first start with the Mean Green. Jackson started 10 games at UCF last season, throwing for more than 2,000 yards and accounting for 13 touchdowns. Saturday also marks North Texas' first appearance on the national FOX network, with Big Noon Kickoff broadcasting from Bloomington before the game. ## What to Watch - **Hoover's Indiana debut:** The market expects the Hoosiers to win comfortably, but this is the first live look at the quarterback tasked with following Mendoza. - **The 40.5-point threshold:** Indiana's 99% win probability leaves virtually no suspense about the favorite, but the Hoosiers covering the spread is priced at just 47%. - **North Texas' overhaul:** Brown's new staff and 70 newcomers make the Mean Green difficult to evaluate from last season's solid results. - **Jackson's return:** North Texas' new quarterback has already played in Memorial Stadium, just from the opposite sideline.
