## Quick Brief

The S&P 500 enters the fourth quarter after a strong year, although momentum has cooled from its August peak.

The index posted a modest gain in September and finished Wednesday about 2% below its August record. The headline performance also masked weaker results across much of the market.

Prediction markets nevertheless lean toward additional gains before year-end. The three most likely individual ranges span 7,600 through 8,199.99, while the current leader (7,800 to 7,999.99) carries only a 19% probability.

That leaves the market pointing higher without showing much conviction about exactly where the rally finishes.

## The 8,000 question

The S&P 500 reaching the neighborhood of 8,000 would hardly put prediction markets at odds with Wall Street.

Goldman Sachs raised its 2026 year-end target to 8,000 in May, citing stronger earnings expectations. JPMorgan followed in August, lifting its target to 8,000 as it pointed to corporate earnings and continued AI investment. Barclays raised its target to 7,950 in September after a strong second-quarter earnings season.

From Wednesday's 7,651.54 close, reaching 8,000 would require a gain of about 4.6% during the fourth quarter.

The prediction market reflects that possibility without making it the overwhelming outcome. The 8,000–8,199.99 range sits at 17%, two points behind the 7,800–7,999.99 band.

## Earnings provide the bull case

Corporate profits remain one of the strongest arguments for further gains.

Analysts have continued raising third-quarter earnings expectations, an unusual development at this stage of the reporting cycle. FactSet said the bottom-up Q3 earnings estimate increased 1.2% during July and August, compared with the declines that typically occur during that period.

The market's 2026 advance has increasingly been supported by profits rather than simply investors paying higher multiples. Goldman Sachs argued earlier this year that corporate profit growth had powered the rally while valuations remained comparatively stable.

AI remains central to that story. Goldman estimated AI-infrastructure beneficiaries would account for roughly half of 2026 earnings growth when it raised its forecast in May, while JPMorgan and Barclays have also cited AI investment in their more recent year-end outlooks.

## Why the market isn't running away

The S&P 500 peaked at 7,816.70 in August and has since traded largely sideways. September's headline performance masked weakness across much of the market, with technology providing much of the support.

Treasury yields remain another pressure point. The 10-year yield climbed above 5% during the third quarter and pushed to roughly 5.34% Thursday morning, its highest level since 2002.

That combination helps explain the shape of the board. Traders aren't heavily concentrated on a major fourth-quarter breakout, but neither are they pricing a substantial retreat as the central outcome.

## What to Watch

- **The 8,000 line:** Several major Wall Street forecasts cluster around this level, while prediction markets give the 8,000–8,199.99 range a 17% probability.
- **Third-quarter earnings:** Another strong reporting season could determine whether the index can break out of its recent range.
- **Market breadth:** September's modest index gain masked weaker performance across much of the market.
- **AI spending:** Continued investment has been a major earnings driver and remains central to several bullish year-end forecasts.
- **Rates and inflation:** Elevated yields remain one of the clearest obstacles to further valuation expansion during the final quarter.
