Texas opens its 2026 season Saturday with Manning back for Year 2 as QB1 and entering the fall as one of the early Heisman Trophy favorites. The winner market offers little suspense. The more pressing question is how the Longhorns' offense opens the season.

## Quick Brief

Texas enters 2026 with high expectations as a national title contender with a Heisman Trophy candidate behind center.

Manning started all 13 games in 2025, throwing for 3,163 yards and 26 touchdowns while adding 399 rushing yards and 10 scores. Texas went 10–3, won seven of its final eight games, and closed the season with a 41–27 Citrus Bowl victory over Michigan.

Now comes the question that will follow Manning throughout his second full season as QB1: how much higher can he take the offense?

Prediction markets expect Texas to handle Texas State, pricing the Longhorns at 97% to win. What happens beyond that is much less settled. Texas has only a 46% probability of winning by more than 30.5 points, while its team total of more than 44.5 points sits at 49%.

The market is essentially split on whether Texas reaches 45.

## How Many Points Does Texas Score?

That's the contract that makes Saturday's opener more interesting than the winner market suggests.

Texas State allowed 29 points per game in 2025, but the Bobcats also fielded one of the more productive offenses in the country, averaging 36.5 points and nearly 473 yards per game. They scored at least 40 points six times and ended the season with a 41–10 bowl victory over Rice.

Traders are pricing slightly more than a coin flip that the teams combine for 60 points, but they're considerably less certain that Texas supplies most of them by itself. The Longhorns' 44.5-point team total sits almost exactly at 50/50, and a victory by more than 30.5 points is priced at just 46%.

Put together, the board says something more nuanced than Texas wins big. A comfortable Longhorn victory is expected. An offensive avalanche is not.

## What Does Year 2 Look Like for Arch Manning?

Manning's first full season as the starter was productive, but his finish provided a better glimpse of the ceiling Texas hopes to see more consistently in 2026.

Over his final six games, Manning threw for 1,714 yards, added 205 on the ground, and accounted for 20 total touchdowns. In the Citrus Bowl against Michigan, he produced 376 yards of total offense and four touchdowns, including a career-high 155 rushing yards.

That late-season surge helped heighten expectations heading into the fall. Manning earned preseason recognition from the Walter Camp, Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, Manning, and Johnny Unitas awards, and he’s listed among the early favorites in a wide-open Heisman race.

Saturday provides the first evidence of whether that late-2025 trajectory carries over.

The opponent is favorable. The expectations are high. With prediction markets split on whether Texas even reaches 45 points, Manning has an immediate benchmark for just how explosive this version of the Longhorns can be.

## Texas State Gets the First Look

The Bobcats arrive in Austin with their own transition underway.

Texas State went 7–6 last season and finished by winning four straight games, including its third consecutive bowl victory. The program now begins its first season in the Pac-12 after moving from the Sun Belt.

Saturday also revives a matchup that has barely existed despite the schools being separated by roughly 30 miles. Texas and Texas State have met only once before, with Texas winning 36–0 in 1930.

For the Bobcats, the assignment is immediate: their first football game as a Pac-12 member comes against a top-five Texas team with one of the country's most scrutinized quarterbacks.

## What to Watch

- **Manning's next step:** He finished 2025 playing some of his best football. Saturday is the first indication of whether that carries into a season with Heisman-level expectations.
- **The 44.5-point mark:** Texas is almost certain to win, but traders are almost perfectly divided on whether the Longhorns score 45.
- **How quickly Texas takes control:** Winning by more than 30.5 points is priced at only 46%, considerably below the 97% probability attached to simply winning.
- **Texas State's offense:** The Bobcats averaged more than 36 points per game last season, giving the 59.5-point game total intrigue beyond a one-sided Texas outburst.

Texas begins the season with the market treating a win as the easy part. The more revealing result may be what Manning and the offense do with it and whether the first Saturday of 2026 looks like the beginning of another step forward.
