Bills vs. Texans: Prediction Markets Price a Week 1 Coin Flip

The Bills begin the Joe Brady era Sunday in Houston, where recent history has been decidedly unkind to Buffalo. Prediction markets expect another close one.

Prediction markets have spent much of the offseason struggling to separate Buffalo and Houston. Little has changed with kickoff approaching.

The Bills hold a narrow 52% edge, but the rest of the board looks even tighter. Traders are essentially split over whether Buffalo can win by more than 1.5 points and whether the teams will combine for more than 44.5.

The uncertainty is justified. Both teams went 12–5 and reached the playoffs last season. 

Houston has been a particularly difficult matchup for Buffalo, especially on the road. The Texans beat the Bills 23–19 in Houston last November. 

Can Buffalo solve the Houston defense?

For Josh Allen, Sunday's matchup offers an immediate test against a defense that has repeatedly caused him problems.

Houston finished last season with the NFL's top-ranked defense, then added to the unit during the offseason. Allen has lost all three of his regular-season starts in Houston, posting a combined 64.2 passer rating while taking 11 sacks.

The most recent meeting was particularly rough. Houston sacked Allen eight times in last November's 23–19 win, consistently disrupting a Buffalo offense that still had an opportunity to steal the game late. 

The challenge for Buffalo is straightforward: keep Houston from wrecking the game up front again. Pass protection is one of the clearest pressure points in Sunday's rematch.

A new era starts immediately for Buffalo

There isn't much of a runway for Brady.

His first regular-season game as Buffalo's head coach comes against a fellow 2025 playoff team. The Bills are also installing a new defense under coordinator Jim Leonhard. Buffalo ranked 28th against the run last season and allowed 5.1 yards per carry, giving the new staff an obvious area to address.

Sunday serves as an early measuring stick on both sides of the ball. Buffalo's offense gets one of the league's toughest defenses, while Leonhard's new unit gets a crack at C.J. Stroud and a Houston team coming off a 12-win season.

Houston has owned the matchup at home

The near-coin-flip market also fits the recent history between these teams.

Buffalo has lost its last five regular-season games against Houston on the road, plus the 2019 AFC Wild Card game. The Bills' last victory in Houston came all the way back in 2006, when JP Losman found Peerless Price for the winning touchdown with nine seconds remaining.

Each of the last four regular-season meetings in Houston has been decided by seven points or fewer. That history won’t determine what happens Sunday, but it does provide a fitting backdrop for a prediction market that has spent months hovering around 50%.

• Joe Brady's debut: Buffalo begins a new coaching era against a team that won 12 games and reached the AFC Divisional Round last season.
• Buffalo's new defense: Leonhard inherits a unit that struggled badly against the run in 2025. Houston provides the first indication of whether that changes.
• A market searching for separation: Winner, margin, and total contracts all remain clustered around 50%, leaving little consensus across the board.
