Broncos vs. Chiefs: Markets Give KC the MNF Edge as Mahomes Returns
Kansas City opens the 2026 season at home on Monday Night Football as a modest market favorite against the reigning AFC West champion Broncos.
The balance of power shifted dramatically in the AFC West last season. Denver swept Kansas City, won the division, and reached the AFC Championship Game. The Chiefs begin their attempt to reclaim the top spot Monday night with Patrick Mahomes back under center.

Quick Brief
The Chiefs enter Monday night with a 55% chance of winning on Kalshi, compared with 45% for Denver. The benchmark contracts similarly point toward a competitive game, with Kansas City favored by 2.5 points and the total set at 43.5.
That relatively narrow gap comes after a season in which these teams went in opposite directions. Denver finished 14–3, captured its first AFC West title since 2015, and earned the AFC's No. 1 seed. Kansas City stumbled to 6–11 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
The Broncos also swept last season's series, beating Kansas City 22–19 in Denver before winning 20–13 at Arrowhead on Christmas Day. That second victory was Denver's first in Kansas City since 2015.
The season-opening Monday Night Football matchup provides an immediate test of whether that changing of the guard carries into 2026.

Mahomes returns to a very different AFC West
Mahomes is back. Monday will be his first game since suffering ACL and LCL tears in his left knee last December. The injury ended his season as the Chiefs spiraled toward a six-game losing streak to finish 2025. Mahomes was a full participant in practice this week.
He returns with a significant new weapon. Kansas City signed reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III after Walker rushed for 1,027 yards for Seattle last season and then delivered 135 rushing yards in Super Bowl LX.
Walker is expected to be a factor immediately. His 60+ rushing-yard contract sits at 52%, giving traders roughly a coin-flip expectation that he reaches that mark in his Chiefs debut.
Kansas City's challenge is that Denver's defense remains built to make life difficult for quarterbacks. The Broncos have led the NFL in sacks in each of the past two seasons. Kansas City managed just 19 points in the teams' first meeting last year.
Bo Nix gets another shot at Arrowhead
Denver has its own returning quarterback.
Nix fractured his right ankle late in the Broncos' Divisional Round victory over Buffalo, forcing him to miss the AFC Championship Game. Monday will mark 240 days since the injury.
His last trip to Arrowhead was fruitful. Nix helped Denver earn a 20–13 Christmas Day victory, throwing a fourth-quarter touchdown to RJ Harvey and adding 42 rushing yards.
The offense around him has evolved. Denver added Jaylen Waddle to a receiving group that already includes Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., and Evan Engram. For Waddle's first Broncos game, traders give him a 54% chance of recording at least 50 receiving yards.
The quarterback expectations are less decisive. Nix sits almost exactly at a coin flip to throw for at least 225 yards, while Mahomes is priced at 42% to throw two or more touchdown passes.
Denver flipped the rivalry last season
For most of the Mahomes era, Kansas City controlled this matchup. Last season looked very different.
Denver's 22–19 victory in November strengthened its grip on the division, with the Broncos intercepting Mahomes in the red zone and holding Kansas City to minus-3 yards across its final two possessions. The Christmas rematch produced another Denver win, this time at Arrowhead.
Those victories helped Denver end Kansas City's nine-year reign atop the AFC West. Prediction markets give Kansas City the edge in the first meeting of 2026.
What to Watch
- Mahomes' return: His first regular-season action since the knee injury comes against a Denver defense that beat Kansas City twice last season.
- Bo Nix back under center: Nix's first game since fracturing his ankle sends him straight back to the stadium where Denver won on Christmas night.
- Kenneth Walker III's Chiefs debut: The reigning Super Bowl MVP gives Kansas City a new weapon, with traders pricing his chances of reaching 60 rushing yards at roughly a coin flip.
- Denver's pass rush: The Broncos have led the league in sacks in consecutive seasons. Kansas City will be without tackle Josh Simmons, who has been ruled out with a back injury.
- AFC West control: Denver ended Kansas City's nine-year run as division champion last season. The rematch begins the fight for 2026 immediately.
