Quick Brief

The race for the 2026 college football national championship begins with a tightly packed group of contenders.

Ohio State enters the season as the prediction market favorite at 13%, narrowly ahead of Notre Dame and Texas at 12%. Oregon follows at 11%, while defending national champion Indiana and Georgia are both priced at 9%.

The narrow range leaves no dominant preseason favorite. Only four percentage points separate the top six teams, with several other contenders close enough to move into the leading group once the season gets underway.

The Big Picture

Ohio State also opens the season at No. 1 in the AP poll, but there is less agreement on the order behind the Buckeyes.

Oregon is ranked No. 2 in the preseason poll, followed by Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas, and Indiana. Prediction market traders currently favor Notre Dame and Texas slightly more than those rankings suggest, while Oregon and Georgia sit somewhat lower.

The Big Ten has produced the past three national champions, including Indiana's undefeated title run last season, and four teams from the conference begin 2026 ranked inside the AP top 10.

Ohio State brings back quarterback Julian Sayin and star receiver Jeremiah Smith, while Texas returns Arch Manning to lead another talented roster. Oregon returns quarterback Dante Moore but enters the season with new coordinators, and defending champion Indiana begins the year with a new starting quarterback in TCU transfer Josh Hoover.

Reading the Market

Ohio State's 13% probability is enough to lead the market, but it also illustrates how open traders believe the championship race is.

The top four teams are separated by only two percentage points, and no contender begins the season with even a 15% probability of winning the title.

That compression also leaves plenty of room for the board to change quickly. Notre Dame, Texas, and Oregon are jockeying with Ohio State in the market's leading tier, while Indiana and Georgia remain within four points of the top spot.

With more than $15.5 million already traded, the market enters the season with significant activity but little consensus about which contender will ultimately separate from the field.

What to Watch

Actual games will soon begin testing the assumptions behind the preseason market.

Ohio State and Texas provide one of the earliest major measuring sticks when they meet Sept. 12. The matchup features two of the current top three championship choices and could quickly reshape expectations around both teams.

Quarterback play will also be worth watching across the leading group. Ohio State, Texas, and Oregon return established starters, while Indiana begins its title defense with a transition at the position.

The expanded College Football Playoff gives more contenders a path into the postseason. As the tightly packed preseason market suggests, traders aren't ready to identify a team most likely to emerge from it.
