Quick Brief

Scottie Scheffler is the clear favorite heading into the final event of the PGA Tour season.

Prediction market traders give Scheffler a 22% chance of winning the TOUR Championship, more than twice the probability of Rory McIlroy at 9.7%. Xander Schauffele follows at 7.4%, with Wyndham Clark at 5.3% and Patrick Cantlay at 4.7%.

Scheffler enters East Lake at No. 1 in the FedExCup standings for the fifth consecutive season. That position doesn't give him a head start, however. All 30 players begin Thursday at even par, leaving the FedExCup to be decided by a straight tournament.

The Big Picture

The TOUR Championship brings the PGA Tour's three-event FedExCup Playoffs to a close at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

The 30-player field consists of those who advanced through the first two playoff events, but their previous FedExCup positions no longer determine where they begin the tournament. The Starting Strokes system, which previously gave the points leader a multi-shot advantage, was eliminated before last year's TOUR Championship.

The player with the lowest score over four rounds will win both the TOUR Championship and the FedExCup. This year's tournament carries a $40 million purse, including $10 million for the winner.

Scheffler is seeking his second FedExCup title, while McIlroy can add a fourth to his record total. Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood returns after winning the first TOUR Championship under the revised format last year.

Reading the Market

Scheffler's 22% probability gives him a sizable advantage over any individual challenger, but traders still see considerable uncertainty across the field.

McIlroy is the only other player approaching a double-digit probability. Schauffele sits below 8%, and the market quickly spreads out from there.

The pricing has also been relatively steady since the market opened. Scheffler has remained near the low-20% range, while McIlroy has gradually moved toward 10%.

East Lake provides another reason to keep several challengers in view. The 7,440-yard, par-70 course has rewarded length, an attribute that could benefit several of the leading names on the board.

Schauffele also brings an extensive record of success at the course, with eight consecutive finishes of T7 or better entering this week.

What to Watch

With everyone starting even, Thursday’s opening round immediately tests the market's assumptions.

Scheffler has been the player to beat throughout the season and enters the finale atop both the FedExCup standings and the prediction market. His health is one factor to monitor after he revealed that he dealt with hand, foot, and mouth disease during last week's BMW Championship.

McIlroy presents the clearest individual challenge according to traders, while Schauffele's history at East Lake gives the third choice on the board another compelling case.

The format also leaves little protection for the favorite. Scheffler's season-long performance earned him the top position entering Atlanta, but once play begins Thursday, all 30 players start from the same place.
