Quick Brief

Prediction market traders currently favor Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to win the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, but the early race remains wide open.

Ocasio-Cortez leads the Kalshi market at 18%, followed closely by Jon Ossoff at 16%. Gavin Newsom, who spent much of the past year atop the board, has fallen to third at 13%.

The shifting order comes with the 2028 race still far from taking shape. None of the three market leaders has launched a presidential campaign. The 2026 midterm elections remain the more immediate political test.

The Big Picture

Democrats recently finalized the opening stretch of their 2028 presidential primary calendar, providing some structure to a race that won't begin for nearly a year and a half.

South Carolina is scheduled to hold the first Democratic primary on Jan. 22, followed by Nevada on Feb. 1 and New Hampshire on Feb. 8. New Mexico, Michigan, and Virginia round out the six-state early window.

The lineup continues the Democratic Party's break from its traditional Iowa-New Hampshire opening. Iowa is absent from the early window, while New Hampshire remains an early contest but moves behind South Carolina and Nevada.

The new order reshapes the early path to the nomination and could eventually test whether national interest in prospective candidates translates across a varied group of early states.

For now, much of the attention is centered on politicians who haven't committed to running.

Ocasio-Cortez recently declined to rule out a 2028 presidential campaign when asked about her political future. Ossoff, meanwhile, has drawn increasing national attention even as he remains focused on winning reelection to the Senate in Georgia this November.

Reading the Market

The most notable feature of the market may be how much its leadership has changed.

Newsom traded above 30% for portions of late 2025 and remained the clear market leader entering 2026.

His probability has since declined, while Ocasio-Cortez and Ossoff have climbed

into the top two positions.

That leaves the current market without a dominant favorite. Only five percentage points separate the top three, and even Ocasio-Cortez's 18% probability leaves most of the market distributed among other potential candidates.

The current prices also reflect speculation more than an established presidential contest. Candidate decisions, the midterm results, and developments over the next year could substantially reshape a field that remains largely hypothetical.

What to Watch

The 2026 midterms provide the next major checkpoint.

Ossoff's reelection campaign in Georgia carries particularly direct implications. A victory in a closely watched Senate race could strengthen the national attention already surrounding him, while a loss would alter the political calculus considerably.

The period after the midterms should also bring more clarity about which Democrats are seriously considering presidential campaigns. Ocasio-Cortez has kept her options open, while Newsom and other potential contenders will have opportunities to signal their intentions as the focus begins shifting toward 2028.

From there, watch whether the market begins consolidating around a smaller group of candidates or remains fragmented as the first primary contests approach.
