Quick Brief

The Rams enter their season opener with a 64% probability of beating the 49ers for the NFL's first regular season game in Australia.

The secondary markets show less separation. Los Angeles has a 51% probability of winning by more than 3.5 points, while the probability of the teams combining for more than 47.5 points sits at 52%.

It's a familiar NFC West matchup in an unfamiliar setting. Los Angeles has won four of its last five games against San Francisco, including a 42–26 victory last November. Matthew Stafford threw four touchdown passes in that meeting.

The Rams arrive with Super Bowl expectations

Los Angeles enters 2026 as the favorite in Super Bowl prediction market pricing after going 12–5 and reaching the NFC Championship Game last season.

Stafford returns after winning his first NFL MVP award. The Rams added reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to a defense that was already among the league's best in 2025. Garrett, who set an NFL single-season record with 23 sacks last year, will make his Rams debut Thursday.

One anticipated addition will have to wait.

Aaron Donald ended his two-year retirement on Aug. 30, but the Rams ruled him out of the opener after limited preparation time. Donald remained in Los Angeles rather than traveling to Melbourne. Garrett is expected to start opposite Byron Young.

Two very different approaches to Australia

The setting adds an unusual variable to an otherwise familiar rivalry.

San Francisco arrived in Australia roughly a week before kickoff to acclimate to the time difference. The Rams took the opposite approach, maintaining their normal schedule in California and planning to arrive in Melbourne only about a day before the game.

The NFL has spent nearly two years preparing for its Australian debut. The league expects the roughly 100,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground to be near capacity, with the game kicking off locally at 10:35 a.m. Friday. It's the first of a record nine international NFL games across seven countries this season.

San Francisco also enters with two important pieces returning from major injuries. Nick Bosa is expected to play after tearing his ACL last September, while George Kittle has returned from the Achilles injury he suffered during the playoffs.

What to Watch

  • How much separation the Rams create. Los Angeles is the clear favorite at 64%, but traders are almost evenly split on whether the Rams win by more than 3.5 points.
  • Myles Garrett's Rams debut. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year gives Los Angeles a major new pass-rushing threat.
  • San Francisco's returning stars. Bosa is expected to play after his ACL recovery, while Kittle's return gives Brock Purdy another important piece of the 49ers offense.
  • The travel experiment. San Francisco and Los Angeles took dramatically different approaches to preparing for the 13,000-kilometer trip.
