Alabama's passing game is heating up
Russell's performance against South Carolina showed what Alabama's offense can look like when the passing game clicks.
The sophomore completed 21 of 27 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 35 yards and another score on the ground. Alabama generated 489 total yards and eight plays of at least 20 yards.
Ryan Coleman-Williams caught two touchdowns and finished with 98 yards. He leads Alabama with 333 receiving yards through four games, while Russell has thrown for 1,129.
The market gives Alabama a 67% chance of reaching 250 receiving yards and a 61% probability of producing at least two receiving touchdowns.
Starting right tackle Jayvin James, who has started each of Alabama's first four games, will miss Saturday after suffering a lower-body injury against South Carolina. Tyrell Miller replaced him last week and could be asked to protect Russell's right side against Mississippi State.
Mississippi State has answered every challenge
The Bulldogs have already shown they can win when games turn against them.
Mississippi State trailed South Carolina 16-0 before responding with a 41-7 run. Against Missouri, the Bulldogs fell behind 24-17 before scoring the final 14 points to win 31-24.
Taylor drove the latest comeback with 360 passing yards and three touchdowns. Fluff Bothwell added 122 rushing yards and 55 receiving yards, giving him three consecutive 100-yard rushing games.
Through four games, Taylor has 1,377 total yards and 14 touchdown passes, while Bothwell ranks second in the SEC with 402 rushing yards.
Mississippi State enters Saturday averaging 40.8 points per game while allowing 18.3. Alabama has produced a remarkably similar scoring profile, averaging 38.8 while giving up 17.5.
What to Watch
- Russell's encore: Alabama's quarterback is coming off 400 total yards and five touchdowns in his best performance of the season.
- Taylor under pressure: Mississippi State's quarterback has 14 touchdown passes and has already directed two SEC comeback wins.
- Bothwell's streak: The Bulldogs' lead back has topped 100 rushing yards in three straight games, giving Mississippi State another way to stress Alabama's defense.
- Mississippi State's fast starts: The Bulldogs have scored on their opening possession in all four games this season. That makes the first-touchdown market, where Mississippi State holds a slight edge, another supporting contract worth watching.
