Clemson vs. LSU: Prediction Markets Favor LSU in Lane Kiffin's Debut

Lane Kiffin makes his LSU debut Saturday night against the same Clemson program the Tigers beat to open last season, and prediction markets expect another LSU victory.

A year ago, No. 9 LSU went into Clemson and beat the No. 4 Tigers, 17–10. The rematch arrives with the programs in very different places: LSU begins a new era at home, while Clemson opens a season outside the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2011.

Quick Brief

Same matchup. Same opening weekend. Very different expectations.

LSU entered last year's game ranked No. 9 and left Clemson with a 17–10 victory over the fourth-ranked Tigers. The win snapped LSU's five-game losing streak in season openers and provided an early high point in a season that ultimately ended 7–6.

Clemson's season went in the opposite direction from its lofty preseason expectations. The Tigers stumbled to a 1–3 start, finished 7–6, and now enter 2026 unranked in the preseason AP poll for the first time since 2011.

Prediction markets don't expect Clemson to reverse last year's result. LSU carries a 77% probability of winning Kiffin's debut, compared with 23% for Clemson.

The rest of the board is considerably less decisive. LSU is priced at 47% to win by more than 10.5 points, while the probability of the teams combining for more than 50.5 points sits at 48%.

LSU is the clear favorite. How the Kiffin era begins is open to debate.

The Lane Kiffin Era Starts at Tiger Stadium

Few coaching debuts arrive with this kind of stage.

Kiffin took over LSU after six seasons at Ole Miss, where he won 55 games and finished his tenure with an 11–1 regular season in 2025. His first offseason in Baton Rouge included what LSU describes as the nation's No. 1-rated transfer portal class and a top-10 high school signing class.

Now comes the first look at how quickly the pieces fit together.

Prediction markets aren't treating the coaching transition as much reason for caution about the result. LSU's 77% win probability is substantial against a Clemson program that has been one of college football's most consistent winners under Dabo Swinney.

But the secondary contracts leave room for uncertainty about what Kiffin's first LSU team looks like. Traders are evenly split on whether LSU scores more than 30.5 points, while an LSU victory by more than 10.5 is slightly less than a coin flip.

Tiger Stadium adds another layer. LSU is 30–5 at home since 2021, including 24–4 in night games. This is the program's first season opener in Death Valley since 2020.

ESPN's College GameDay is also in Baton Rouge for Kiffin's debut, marking the show's 500th road edition.

Clemson Opens Outside the AP Top 25

Clemson enters 2026 from an unfamiliar position.

The Tigers have been a fixture in the preseason AP Top 25 throughout most of Swinney's run, but last year's 7–6 finish ended that streak. Clemson went just 3–4 at home. The program has lost seven starters on offense and seven on defense from the 2025 team.

The biggest change is at quarterback.

Christopher Vizzina takes over after Cade Klubnik finished his Clemson career with more than 10,000 passing yards and 40 starts. Vizzina enters the season with 596 career passing yards across 14 appearances and one start. He'll still have familiar targets in T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr., who combined for eight catches and 121 yards against LSU last season.

There's change on the sideline, too. Chad Morris is back as Clemson's offensive coordinator, returning to the role he held from 2011 through 2014. During that first stint, Clemson averaged 36.3 points and 468.5 yards per game.

The market isn't dismissing Clemson entirely. A 23% win probability still represents a meaningful upset chance, and traders are almost evenly divided on whether the Tigers reach 20 points.

A Rematch With the Sites Reversed

Last year's opener was the first regular-season meeting between LSU and Clemson after four postseason matchups.

Now Clemson makes its first trip to Baton Rouge. LSU leads the all-time series 4–1, including last year's victory. Clemson hasn't opened a season at an SEC stadium since beginning its 2016 national championship campaign with a 19–13 win at Auburn.

The circumstances have flipped considerably in 12 months.

Clemson was the No. 4 team in the country and playing at home last August. Saturday, the Tigers arrive unranked, breaking in a new quarterback, and facing a market that gives them less than a one-in-four chance.

LSU, meanwhile, gets the rematch at night in Tiger Stadium, but with a head coach beginning a new era.

What to Watch

  • Kiffin's LSU debut: The market has already made LSU a clear favorite. Saturday provides the first look at what Kiffin's offense and rebuilt roster actually look like together.
  • Vizzina's first opener as QB1: Clemson replaces a four-year contributor in Klubnik with a quarterback who enters the season with only one career start.
  • The 10.5-point threshold: LSU has a 77% probability of winning, but only a 47% chance of winning by more than 10.5 points.
  • Where the scoring comes from: LSU reaching 31, Clemson reaching 20, and the teams combining for 51 are all priced essentially as coin flips.

The market sees LSU as the considerably more likely winner Saturday night. Beyond that, there's little consensus, which is fitting for an opener that pairs a new era at LSU with a Clemson program trying to prove last season was a detour rather than a new direction.
