Fresno State vs. USC: What Prediction Markets Say About Friday's Game
USC is heavily favored to beat Fresno State on Friday night, but prediction markets are considerably less certain about how comfortably the Trojans will win.
No. 14 USC gets a second straight home game to open the season, this time against a Fresno State team making its 2026 debut. Prediction markets see little uncertainty about the likely winner, but the secondary markets leave a much more interesting question around the margin.

Quick Brief
USC enters Friday night with a 92% probability of beating Fresno State, making the Trojans one of the clearest favorites on the Week 1 board.
The market's confidence comes after USC opened its season with a 42–26 win over San Jose State. The final score obscures how one-sided most of the game was: USC led 28–0 at halftime and 35–3 through three quarters before the Spartans scored 23 points in the fourth. The Trojans finished with 505 yards of offense.
Fresno State presents a different test. The Bulldogs went 9–4 in Matt Entz's first season as head coach, capped by an 18–3 Arizona Bowl win over Miami (Ohio). Friday marks their first game as a member of the rebuilt Pac-12.
Prediction markets overwhelmingly expect USC to move to 2–0. They're much less decisive about what happens between kickoff and the final whistle.
The Market Sees a USC Win, Not Necessarily a Rout
The gap between the winner and margin markets is the most interesting part of Friday's board.
USC carries a 92% probability of winning outright. But the probability of the Trojans winning by more than 21.5 points sits at just 49%, essentially a coin flip.
The scoring markets tell a similar story. More than 51.5 combined points is priced at 52%, while USC scoring more than 37.5 sits at 49%. Fresno State topping 14.5 points is at 46%.
USC won convincingly in its opener against San Jose State, but didn't cover the pregame spread. Friday's market again draws a distinction between the Trojans winning and running away with the game. Traders show little doubt about the likely winner, but much less conviction that USC will create more than three touchdowns of separation.
Maiava Gets Another Early Showcase
USC quarterback Jayden Maiava wasted little time adding to expectations surrounding his 2026 season.
Maiava completed 25 of 29 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns against San Jose State while adding another score on the ground. His 86.2% completion rate was the best single-game mark by a USC quarterback since at least 1995 among players with 25 or more attempts. The performance earned him AP National Player of the Week honors.
Freshman receiver Trent Mosley also made an immediate impact, catching seven passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. USC noted that was the most receiving yards by a Trojan true freshman in his debut since JuJu Smith-Schuster recorded 123 against, appropriately enough, Fresno State in 2014.
Friday gives that offense another chance to build momentum before USC's Big Ten schedule begins.
Fresno State Brings a Familiar Face Back to Los Angeles
Fresno State's biggest question is how much of last season's defensive success carries into 2026.
The Bulldogs allowed 18.8 points and 285.7 yards per game in 2025, both best in the Mountain West, while intercepting 20 passes. That defense helped Fresno State finish 9–4 in Entz's first season.
Entz also knows the program on the other sideline. Before taking the Fresno State job, he spent the 2024 season on Lincoln Riley's staff as USC's assistant head coach for defense and linebackers.
The Bulldogs will break in junior Jayden Mandal as their starting quarterback, while running back Rayshon Luke returns after averaging 6.3 yards per carry last season.
USC has dominated the series overall, holding a 4–1 official record against Fresno State, excluding one vacated victory. Fresno State's lone win came in the 1992 Freedom Bowl.
What to Watch
- USC's margin: The 92% winner probability is decisive. The 49% probability of winning by more than 21.5 points is not.
- Maiava's encore: After an exceptionally efficient opener, USC's quarterback gets another national television window against a defense that was Fresno State's strength last season.
- Fresno State's new quarterback: Mandal makes his first start as the Bulldogs begin their Pac-12 era against a ranked opponent.
- How long the game stays competitive: Fresno State's defense and running game offer a potential formula for shortening the game, which matters considerably more to the secondary markets than to USC's outright win probability.
USC enters Friday night as the overwhelming favorite, but market pricing leaves the more interesting question unresolved. A Trojan victory is clearly the expected outcome, but how much separation USC creates is much closer to a toss-up.
