Quick Brief
Ole Miss enters 2026 coming off the best season in program history.
The Rebels went 13–2, reached the College Football Playoff semifinals, and set school records with 554 points and 7,345 total yards. Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU before the playoff began, prompting the Rebels to promote defensive coordinator Pete Golding to head coach.
Golding then guided Ole Miss through the postseason, going 2–1 and reaching the CFP semifinals. Sunday begins his first full season in charge.
Louisville went 9–4 last year and has won at least nine games in each of Jeff Brohm's first three seasons. The Cardinals enter at No. 24, their first preseason AP ranking since 2017.
The market prefers Ole Miss at 69%, but everything beyond the winner is close to even. The Rebels have a 53% probability of winning by more than 6.5 points, while the game total and both team totals sit at 52%.
Ole Miss is favored. Louisville is hardly being priced as an afterthought.
Ole Miss Returns Its Offensive Headliners
Golding inherits two of the biggest pieces from last year's record-setting offense.
Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss returns after throwing for 3,937 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just three interceptions in 2025. Running back Kewan Lacy rushed for 1,567 yards and 24 touchdowns.
There has been significant turnover around them. Ole Miss lost six offensive starters and seven defensive starters before replenishing the roster with another highly rated transfer class.
That creates one of Sunday's central questions: how much of last year's breakthrough carries into 2026?
Prediction markets have Ole Miss as a sizable favorite to win, while the Rebels' probability of scoring more than 30.5 points sits at 52%.
Louisville Brings Its Own Offensive Questions
Louisville's most established offensive weapon is running back Isaac Brown, who rushed for 884 yards in nine games last season while averaging 8.8 yards per carry.
The bigger unknown is quarterback Lincoln Kienholz.
The Ohio State transfer appeared in 10 games over three seasons with the Buckeyes and attempted only 36 passes. He now gets his first opportunity to run Brohm's offense against a top-10 opponent.
Louisville has a 52% probability of scoring more than 23.5 points. For an underdog breaking in a new quarterback, the market is giving the Cardinals a legitimate path into the game.
Ole Miss and Louisville have met only once before, another neutral-site season opener in 2021. The Rebels won 43–24.
What to Watch
- Golding's first full season: He went 2–1 after taking over during last year's playoff run. Sunday begins the regular-season version of the transition.
- Ole Miss's returning stars: Chambliss and Lacy give the Rebels proven production despite substantial roster turnover.
- Kienholz's debut: Louisville hands Brohm's offense to a quarterback with limited college passing experience.
- The 6.5-point threshold: Ole Miss is a 69% favorite, but winning by more than 6.5 points sits much closer to even at 53%.
Prediction markets favor Ole Miss to start its follow-up to a historic season with a win. Louisville's 31% probability suggests the game could be more competitive than the prevailing weekend narrative of overwhelming favorites.
