Quick Brief

Tulsa and North Texas enter conference play with almost nothing separating them in the winner market.

The Golden Hurricane opened the season 3-0 before losing at Arkansas last week, while North Texas enters 2-2 following a blowout win over Houston Christian.

Thursday presents a contrast in strengths, with North Texas bringing the more productive offense and Tulsa leaning on a defense that has been difficult to score against.

Can Tulsa slow down North Texas?

North Texas' offense has already shown how quickly it can pile up yards and points.

Quarterback Tayven Jackson threw for 483 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-35 loss to Texas State, then completed 16 of 18 passes for 270 yards in Saturday's 63-14 win over Houston Christian. Running back Jahiem White supplied the damage on the ground, rushing for 133 yards and four first-half touchdowns on only 11 carries.

Tulsa presents a considerably different challenge.

The Golden Hurricane have allowed only 109.8 rushing yards per game and rank among the national leaders with 13 sacks. They have also forced seven turnovers and allowed touchdowns on just four of 14 opponent trips into the red zone.

Tulsa's defense was central to its 3-0 start, including a 24-10 win over Oklahoma State in which the Golden Hurricane forced four turnovers.

Tulsa's quarterback question

The larger uncertainty is on the other side of the ball.

Starting quarterback Baylor Hayes has missed Tulsa's last two games after playing the first two. Dexter Williams II started Saturday at Arkansas, throwing for 176 yards as the Golden Hurricane managed only 241 total yards in the 34-6 loss.

Tulsa has otherwise leaned heavily on its defense and running game. The Golden Hurricane average 181.5 rushing yards per game but only 173.3 through the air.

Thursday also brings Tulsa back home, where it is 2-0 and has outscored Oklahoma State and East Texas A&M by a combined 66-10. North Texas, meanwhile, is 0-2 on the road after losses at Indiana and Texas State.

What to Watch

  • Tulsa's quarterback: Hayes' availability could reshape an offense that struggled without him at Arkansas.
  • North Texas through the air: Jackson leads a passing attack averaging more than 340 yards per game.
  • Tulsa's pass rush: The Golden Hurricane's 13 sacks are already well past halfway to their entire 2025 total.
  • Red-zone possessions: Tulsa has allowed touchdowns on fewer than 30% of opponent trips inside the 20.
