Quick Brief

SMU and Florida State arrive at Labor Day night from different starting points.

The Mustangs open 2026 ranked No. 19 in the AP poll after going 9–4 last season. SMU has gone 14–2 in ACC play since joining the conference in 2024, the most conference wins by an ACC team over that span. Quarterback Kevin Jennings returns after throwing for 3,641 yards and 26 touchdowns last season.

This is game two for Florida State. The Seminoles beat New Mexico State 34–17 on Aug. 29, producing 419 yards of offense while holding the Aggies to 47 rushing yards. Transfer quarterback Ashton Daniels threw for 202 yards and a touchdown in his FSU debut, while Ousmane Kromah ran for a career-high 115 yards.

Now comes a considerably different test.

Prediction markets give SMU a slight edge at 57%, but there's little separation anywhere else. The Mustangs' probability of winning by more than 2.5 points is 52%. More than 53.5 combined points sits at 51%, and both team totals are essentially even.

For the final game of college football's opening weekend, traders aren't finding much daylight between the two teams.

Kevin Jennings Gets Another Shot at Florida State

SMU knows what Jennings can do against the Seminoles.

The teams have met only once, in SMU's first ACC home game in September 2024. The Mustangs won 42–16 as Jennings completed 16 of 23 passes for 254 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. SMU outgained Florida State 458–285 and forced three turnovers.

Two seasons later, Jennings arrives in Tallahassee as one of the ACC's most experienced quarterbacks.

He enters 2026 with a 19–7 record as SMU's starter and leads active ACC quarterbacks with 7,709 career passing yards and 8,267 yards of total offense. He's also on preseason watch lists for the Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, Manning, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose awards.

SMU's team total provides a useful benchmark for his season debut. The probability of the Mustangs scoring more than 27.5 points sits at 52%.

Florida State Gets Its First Real Test

The Seminoles don't need a reminder of how quickly expectations can change.

Florida State opened last season by beating No. 8 Alabama 31–17, only to finish 5–7 overall and 2–6 in ACC play. All five wins came at home.

The 2026 opener supplied a win, but also left room for improvement. Florida State beat New Mexico State by 17 points and ran for 217 yards, although Daniels threw an interception and the Aggies produced 272 yards through the air.

Monday provides a much clearer measuring stick.

SMU is ranked, experienced at quarterback, and has lost only two ACC games in its first two seasons in the conference. Florida State, meanwhile, gets the Mustangs at Doak Campbell Stadium before an open week and a Sept. 19 trip to Alabama.

The market isn't dismissing the Seminoles. A 43% win probability puts an FSU victory well within the plausible range, while the team's probability of scoring more than 24.5 points is exactly 50%.

What to Watch

  • Jennings' season debut: The SMU quarterback threw three touchdowns against Florida State in 2024 and has 19 wins as SMU's starter. His experience is one of SMU's clearest advantages entering Monday.
  • Florida State's step up: New Mexico State provided the warm-up. No. 19 SMU should tell us considerably more about where the Seminoles stand.
  • Tight game potential: SMU is favored to win at 57%, but its probability of winning by more than 2.5 points is only 52%.
  • Scoreboard watch: The total and both team totals sit between 50% and 52%, reinforcing just how little conviction traders have beyond a modest SMU edge.

SMU enters Labor Day night with the ranking, the experienced quarterback, and the memory of a 26-point win the last time these programs met. Florida State has home field and a game already behind it.

Prediction markets give the Mustangs the edge, but this is no runaway favorite. Monday night looks like one of the weekend's few games where the winner itself remains very much in play.
