Quick Brief
Prediction markets leave little suspense around the most basic question Saturday afternoon.
No. 14 USC is priced at 98% to beat San Jose State in the Week 0 opener, while the Spartans sit at just 2%. The contracts surrounding that matchup are considerably less certain.
Traders are nearly split on whether USC can win by more than 38.5 points and whether the teams combine for more than 61.5. Team-total markets tell a similar story, with USC slightly favored to reach 50 points and San Jose State slightly favored to reach double digits.
Why the Margin Matters
USC opens Lincoln Riley’s fifth season with substantial expectations and an experienced quarterback in Jayden Maiava. The Trojans are also 6-0 all-time against San Jose State, including a 56-28 victory when the programs last met in 2023.
San Jose State enters from a very different position. The Spartans went 3-9 last season and return only three starters who played more than six games in 2025. Hawaii transfer Luke Weaver takes over at quarterback as Ken Niumatalolo begins his third season in San Jose.
The gap between the programs helps explain USC’s 98% price. Once traders move beyond the winner, there are more intriguing questions to be answered, such as how quickly USC can separate, whether San Jose State can generate enough offense to contribute to the total, and how aggressively the Trojans keep scoring if the game gets out of hand.
Beyond the Winner Market
The 38.5-point margin provides the clearest example. Despite USC being priced as an almost certain winner, traders put the Trojans at only 49% to clear that enormous number.
The total markets are similarly balanced. Over 61.5 sits at 49%, while USC’s team total of 49.5 is priced at 53%. In a nutshell, the question is whether a heavily favored USC team turns the opener into a 50-point offensive showcase.
San Jose State’s 9.5-point team total adds another wrinkle. The market currently gives the Spartans a 55% chance of reaching at least 10 points.
While the winner market is priced at near-certainty levels, the rest of the board isn’t as lopsided.
What to Watch
- How quickly USC separates: A 38.5-point threshold leaves little room for a slow start if the Trojans are going to win by 39 or more.
- The 50-point line: USC reaching 50 sits close to a coin flip and could become one of the more revealing contracts as the game develops.
- Whether San Jose State reaches double digits: The Spartans’ 9.5-point team total could influence several markets at once, particularly if USC’s offense performs as expected.
- Movement beyond the 98%: The outright market has very little room to become more bullish on USC. The spread and scoring contracts should provide the better read on how trader expectations change approaching kickoff.
