When Will OpenAI Achieve AGI? What Prediction Markets Say
Prediction markets see a much greater chance of an OpenAI AGI announcement by the end of 2027 than in the remaining months of 2026, as recent developments raise fresh questions about the timeline.
How close is OpenAI to artificial general intelligence? Prediction markets are putting prices on that question, with three deadlines offering a window into traders' expectations.
The latest contracts show a relatively modest probability of an announcement before 2027, but a substantially higher chance over the following years. Recent comments from OpenAI leadership and advances in AI capabilities add another dimension to the debate.
Market Snapshot
- OpenAI achieves AGI before 2027: 11.5%
- Before 2028: 45%
- Before 2030: 61.1%
- Market volume: $1.11M+
- Resolution: OpenAI publicly announces it has achieved AGI before the applicable deadline.

Quick Brief
Artificial general intelligence, or AGI, generally refers to AI capable of performing a broad range of intellectual tasks at or beyond human levels. There is no universally accepted threshold for determining when that milestone has been reached.
That ambiguity hasn't stopped traders from pricing the timeline.
Kalshi's market puts the probability of an OpenAI AGI announcement before the end of 2026 at 11.5%. The price climbs to 45% before 2028 and 61.1% before 2030.
The question has become particularly relevant following the September debut of GPT-6 Astra, when OpenAI President Greg Brockman suggested the model could represent the beginning of the AGI era. Yet a potentially significant technical breakthrough and a formal declaration of AGI are not necessarily the same thing.
What Does the AGI Prediction Market Actually Measure?
There's an important catch in this market: OpenAI doesn't necessarily have to prove it has achieved AGI. It has to announce it.
Under Kalshi's resolution rules, the contracts are tied to OpenAI publicly declaring that it has attained AGI before the specified deadline. An independent scientific determination isn't required.
That's a meaningful distinction in a field where researchers and technology companies have yet to agree on a universal definition of AGI. A breakthrough that some experts consider AGI might not trigger the market, while an official OpenAI announcement could.
The deadlines are cumulative, too. An announcement in 2027 would satisfy both the before 2028 and before 2030 contracts, but not the before 2027 contract.
In other words, traders aren't simply betting on when AI will cross a technological threshold. They're pricing when OpenAI will publicly say that threshold has been crossed.
What We Know About OpenAI's AGI Progress
Recent developments offer several concrete signals, although none settles the question of when OpenAI will formally declare AGI.
- GPT-6 Astra's September debut. OpenAI introduced Astra on September 3, reporting major advances in computer use, coding, cybersecurity, and scientific reasoning. President Greg Brockman went further, suggesting the model might eventually be viewed as the arrival of AGI and saying he personally believed the milestone had been reached. Those comments generated headlines, but stopped short of an unambiguous company-wide announcement that would settle the market's central question.
- AI-assisted scientific discoveries. In September, OpenAI reported that an internal model had produced solutions to more than 100 longstanding mathematical problems, including the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize problem. These are company-reported research advances, not independent confirmation of AGI.
- A focus on automated AI research. In a September 21 statement, OpenAI identified building an automated AI researcher as a central goal. Two days later, CEO Sam Altman told the United Nations Security Council that rapid progress had compressed AI development timelines, while emphasizing the need for safeguards as systems become more autonomous. Neither statement established a specific AGI announcement date.
Taken together, these developments suggest OpenAI is making meaningful progress toward increasingly capable AI systems. What remains unclear is whether that progress will translate into an official AGI announcement anytime soon, which is the question at the heart of this market.
What to Watch
- OpenAI leadership signals: New statements from Sam Altman or other senior executives about AGI milestones, timelines, or remaining technical barriers could shift expectations ahead of any formal announcement.
- New model capabilities: Further advances in autonomous work, scientific discovery, and general-purpose reasoning could influence traders' expectations.
- Automated AI research: Evidence that AI systems can meaningfully accelerate the development of more capable successors would be particularly relevant to OpenAI's stated goals.
- Year-end developments: Major research announcements, model releases, or changes in OpenAI's public messaging before December 31 could influence the market's near-term outlook.
The central question isn't simply how quickly OpenAI's technology advances. It's when the company will publicly declare that it has achieved AGI. That distinction will remain important as traders weigh the possibility of an announcement in 2026 against the longer timelines reflected in the market.
