Quick Brief

The biggest game on Saturday's college football board appears poised to deliver.

Texas gets the home field and the slightest market edge, but traders have found almost nothing separating the Longhorns and Buckeyes. Even the secondary markets tell essentially the same story: neither team is expected to create much distance.

The stakes stretch well beyond Saturday night. Ohio State enters ranked No. 1 and currently leads the national-title market, while No. 4 Texas sits firmly among the top contenders. A win in Austin would give either team an early resume centerpiece and quickly reshape the market for who ultimately wins it all.

Arch Manning gets another crack at Ohio State

Last year’s meeting offers a useful starting point.

Ohio State beat then-No. 1 Texas 14–7 in Columbus, holding the Longhorns scoreless for three quarters and stopping them twice on fourth down deep in Buckeyes territory. Manning finished 17-of-30 for 170 yards, one touchdown, and one interception as Texas outgained Ohio State 336–203 but repeatedly failed to turn drives into points.

A year later, Manning returns with considerably more experience.

He started all 13 games for Texas in 2025 and opened this season by completing 20 of 27 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns in a 59–7 win over Texas State. Texas scored on eight of nine drives and finished with 516 yards of offense.

Saturday serves as a useful measuring stick for how much has changed. Ohio State frustrated Manning in his first attempt. Now he gets the Buckeyes at home, with another season under his belt and one of the strongest supporting casts in the SEC.

Ohio State looks ready for another heavyweight test

The Buckeyes faced little resistance in Week 1.

Ohio State beat Ball State 56–3, scoring exactly 14 points in every quarter. Julian Sayin completed 21 of 25 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns, while the Buckeyes piled up 671 total yards and held Ball State to 165.

Sayin’s growth creates an interesting parallel with Manning.

He was making his first collegiate start when Ohio State beat Texas last year, throwing for only 126 yards but avoiding the mistakes that ultimately separated the teams. Manning entered that game with considerably more hype. The Buckeyes left with the win.

The national-title board could move next

The stakes extend beyond one September win.

Ohio State currently leads the College Football National Championship market at 13%. Texas sits at 11%, in the same tightly packed group as Indiana and Oregon, with Miami and Notre Dame at 12%.

A convincing win would not guarantee either becomes the new championship favorite, but it could easily leave the winner as the market’s presumptive team to beat.

What to Watch

  • Manning’s second shot. Ohio State kept Texas out of the end zone until the fourth quarter last season. Manning now gets the rematch at home with another year of experience.
  • The almost-perfect coin flip. Texas is 52%, Ohio State 48%, and nearly every secondary contract tells the same story: traders see very little separation.
  • Ohio State on the road. The Buckeyes looked dominant against Ball State, but Austin presents their first meaningful test of the season.
  • The championship market. With Ohio State at 13% and Texas at 11%, Saturday night could produce the new leader on a tightly packed national-title board.
