Quick Brief

There isn't much suspense around the winner of the kickoff game for the college football Week 2 slate.

Miami carries a 99% probability of beating Florida A&M, but traders are almost perfectly divided over whether the Hurricanes can win by more than 57.5 points. The total is similarly balanced, with a 50% probability that the teams combine for more than 63.5 points.

The team total markets offer another angle for traders to explore. Miami has a 96% probability of scoring at least 42 points, while FAMU has just a 12% chance of reaching double digits.

Miami won the previous meeting 56–9 in 2024 and has beaten the Rattlers 11 consecutive times.

Miami's bigger markets are already moving

Thursday's matchup comes six days after Miami opened its season with a 45–6 win at Stanford.

Quarterback Darian Mensah completed 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns in his Hurricanes debut. Malachi Toney caught 12 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns, breaking Miami's single-game receiving record.

That performance has already spilled into prediction markets beyond Thursday's game.

Mensah now leads the Heisman Trophy market at 17%, ahead of Arch Manning at 9%. His probability of winning the award has climbed eight points.

Miami, meanwhile, sits at 10% to win the national championship, putting the Hurricanes among the leading contenders on a tightly packed board, headlined by Ohio State at 13%.

Mensah has gone from a high-profile transfer to the early Heisman market leader after one start, while Miami's opening performance reinforced its place among the national-title contenders.

How big could the margin get?

Winning by more than 57.5 points would require a rout even larger than Miami's 56–9 victory over FAMU two years ago.

Florida A&M also enters on a short turnaround after losing 31–13 to South Carolina State on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium. The Rattlers are playing their second game at the venue in five days.

Miami, meanwhile, allowed Stanford only six points and 78 rushing yards in its opener despite traveling across the country for the game.

What to Watch

  • The 57.5-point threshold. Miami is almost universally expected to win, but traders are split on whether the margin reaches truly extreme territory.
  • Darian Mensah's encore. After five touchdown passes in his Miami debut, another productive night would keep the early Heisman conversation moving.
  • Whether FAMU reaches double digits. The market gives the Rattlers only a 12% chance of scoring more than 9.5 points.
  • Miami's futures markets. The Hurricanes sit at 10% for the national title, while Mensah leads the Heisman market at 17%. Will a blowout win under the primetime lights inspire more movement?
